Techno-economic assessment of the FReSMe technology for CO2 emissions mitigation and methanol production from steel plants

The iron and steel industry accounts for 6 % of the global CO2 emissions it is one main hard-to-abate sectors that must be un-locked to reach climate neutrality in coming decades. objective this work assess economics FReSMe (From Residual Steel gases Methanol) process reducing carbon footprint conventional plants based on Blast Furnace route. This reduction achieved by capturing converting part residual into methanol. includes Sorption Enhanced Water Gas Shift (SEWGS) technology treat separating producing a H2-rich stream. latter can recirculated back plant cover its primary energy demand or reacted together with separated synthetize excess used underground storage. Four different configurations methanol production capacities are investigated. Costs performances each configuration assessed compared two reference cases. Results show allows avoid around 60 overall emissions, while post-combustion capture power section only 18 %. cost avoided range 40.6 €/tCO2 – 46.2 €/tCO2. When no tax considered, optimal capacity results 600 t/day Levelized Cost Hot Rolled Coil 520 €/tHRC, 9.4 higher than base case (476 €/tHRC). With rate above €/tCO2, has 300 ensures lower costs systems.
